Guy Fawkes day 2010

In 1605 a group of Catholic conspirators were apprehended after a failed attempt to blow up the British Parliament (with the King in it). Since then countries around the former British Empire celebrate the failed Gunpowder Plot by making effigies of one of the conspirators called Guy Fawkes which they burn a a big bonfire on the 5th of November.

In English class this year we had a mini-bonfire night and the students made small 'Guys' which we burned on our 'bonfire' (engangsgrill). We recited the poem that is traditionally used on the day as we threw our 'Guys' into the flames:

Remember, remember the 5th of November,
Gunpowder Treason and plot
I see no reason, why gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot!
